Announcing the First CiAO Film Project

Working Group Meets Friday, August 20 at 6:00 pm

At the last CiAO Mid-Month Meeting, there was much interest in creating a CiAO Project Film for the UK 2 Days Later 48-hour Short Film Competition (horror theme). So anyone and everyone who is interested in working on this project needs to attend the Working Group meeting so we can make decisions and start "development". This includes crew and actors and writers and whomever else can or should be involved. We need people to show up at the meeting and/or send an e-mail stating your interest and intent if you cannot make the first meeting.

Since the whole film, from beginning to end ("from script to screen"), will be completed in 48 hours, due to the nature of very short time frame contests like this, whatever resources are available at the time will be used to create the film. (that is, you try to develop the characters around the actors at hand, whatever locations can easily be used, props and costuming quickly available, etc.) This is a good team-building and community-oriented project, so people are strongly encouraged to participate. (if "too many" people show up, we can always break into two groups and make two films)

People can show up at Working Group meetings when they can make them, or even on the Day(s)-of, but this will be "first come, first served", so if you really want to insure that you can participate, especially in some specific function if that is your interest, then you need to be proactive and dedicate some time and energy from beginning to end. And also be communicative, especially if your schedule is not wide-open and you are only available at certain times and days. We will attempt to be as accommodating as possible.

Indie Films are like a box of chocolates...

Creating a good (or at least decent) film in 48 hours is not an easy task. So we will need people to understand that and act accordingly, otherwise the end result will not be submission-worthy. Although there is intrinsic and inherent value in making a film regardless of how it turns out, it would be nice to come up with something that has a chance of winning. Although the rules are not strict, we would like to honor the "make a film in 48 hours" concept and do the best job we can within that time frame.

We will do as much pre-production as we can so we are ready for the weekend shoot, if that is possible. There are still several weekends available and that is one of the decisions that will have to be made — which weekend works for the most number of interested people between now and the final end-date. There are other details that need to be ironed out, so we will probably have more than one meeting.

Scheduling

The suggested, potential weekend schedule would be something like this:

 • Friday:   7:00 pm to Midnight (+/-)
       – Come up with idea and write script with some Pre-Production
 • Saturday:   9:00 am to Midnight (+/-)
       – Shoot film
 • Sunday:   9:00 am to 7:00 pm (+/-)
       – Edit and finish Post-Production

And then at some point we will submit the finished film before the submission deadline of September 29.

Who, What, Where, When, Why and How

The meeting location is the Not Quite Hollywood Studio, 120 W. 2nd. St., Chico, CA 95927, between Main and Broadway. Phone: (530) 343-6741 See map (click to see larger version), which also shows parking locations.

There was discussion about how to best implement the primary roles, like Producer, Writer, Director, D.P., etc. It is all-volunteer, of course, so it depends on who wants to perform in what role. (get ready for some (modified) consensus decision-making – Read All About It: — and bring a lucky quarter for flipping)

One method might be to have a 'primary' for some of these positions, with one or more secondaries, or assistants, if there is multiple interest. Not quite "team directing" (or co-directing), as an example, but something similar to that. So there might be a "Primary Director" and one or more "Asst. Directors". (with some deference to the primaries) And also the usual "cross-jobbing" that is often seen in indie filmmaking, as well. Doing it this way could increase the chances that the film will be better. These are some of the decisions that will have to be made.

The resulting film is supposed to be a "micro-budget" 10-minutes or less "horror" film. Which is a wide definition. It will most likely be filmed in and around one or more locations in the Chico area. Probably whatever is free, easily accessible, and comes to mind. There is no requirement as to format, although HD is probably preferred over SD. (so we will have to figure out whose camera to use — there are many decisions like this that will need to be made, before, during, and after) Hopefully the two main points to be emphasized, other than attempting to create a great film, are having fun and learning. You can't beat that.

Please visit the competition homepage and familiarize yourself with some of the films from past competitions if you can. Try to not dwell on the requirements for the film (the items that must be in the film) so we can be fresh on the Day-of.
